Freiburg, Br.
The Rice-IES Program in Freiburg/Br.
Situated in one of Germany’s most scenic cities with easy access to Switzerland, France and the Black Forest, the Rice-IES Freiburg Program offers the ideal study-abroad experience for Rice undergraduates in German Studies. Students can spend either a semester or a full academic year in Freiburg.
Courses
After a three-week orientation — covering intensive German language instruction and an introduction to the city of Freiburg and German student life — students select their classes from a wide range of subject areas: literary studies, art history, media studies, political thought, history, philosophy, economics, biology, chemistry, engineering. Courses are taught at the IES Center and at the renowned Albert-Ludwigs-Universität, one of Germany’s leading universities, where Rice students can enroll for fully credited seminars. All classes are, of course, in German. Further information about the program can be found on the IES Web site. For credit information please consult the Office of International Programs.
Field Trips and Internships
Your time in Freiburg includes a series of field trips to Berlin (usually in the fall semester) and to East Germany and Prague in the Czech Republic (usually in the spring semester).
Apart from its natural beauty and cultural heritage, the area around Freiburg is also one of the most vibrant economic regions in Europe. Students can enrich their study program by applying for an internship through the IES Center. In recent years, the IES Center has been particularly successful in placing students in companies (e.g. Citibank), NGOs (e.g. Caritas), political organizations (e.g. SPD and Bündnis 90/Die Grünen), and international organizations (e.g. United Nations in Geneva and NATO in Brussels).
Costs
Rice University has a fee arrangement with the IES. Please contact the Office of International Programs for detailed information.
