The Roy Jones Fellowships

The Department of German Studies is delighted to announce a number of Roy Jones Fellowships for intermediate-level students of German to attend a three-week, intensive language course in Germany. The fellowship is worth $ 2,000 and can be used for travel, accommodation and/or tuition expenses.

The course is offered by the renowned Herder Institute at the University of Leipzig. Details, including information about housing, can be found at http://www.uni-leipzig.de/interdaf. After receiving the scholarship you must apply directly to Leipzig-interDaF for course admission.

The Leipzig course replaces GERM 304 (the follow-up to GERM 202) and counts toward the German major at Rice.

The application needs to be accompanied by:

  • a letter of recommendation (in most cases from your German professor at Rice);
  • a statement (maximum 250 words) in German on what you hope to gain from an intensive language course and from first-hand cultural experience in Germany;
  • a paragraph in English about how German fits into your major or education goals at Rice;
  • a copy of your Rice transcript.

Deadline: February 1, 2010

For further information contact the undergraduate adviser of German Studies, Professor Christian J. Emden, emden@rice.edu. Completed applications need to be sent to germ@rice.edu with a clear subject line.

The Focus Europe Fellowships

German Studies at Rice is closely involved with Focus Europe, an interdisciplinary program of undergraduate courses and research opportunities in European Studies. The program also provides six annual Summer Research Fellowships (up to $ 5,000 each) for sophomores and juniors, who wish to undertake an independent research project in a European Union member state. These fellowships often lead to an honors thesis and are an ideal preparation for graduate study.

Funds can be used for travel, subsistence, and research-related costs. The topic is limited to any of the following areas: European cultural and intellectual history, literary studies, media studies, political thought, philosophy, and the European Union.

Students are expected to write a research paper or complete a documentary project in another medium, such as video. Research projects are supervised  by a full-time faculty member of their choice with a strong interest in European culture, history or politics.

The fellowships are competitive by application. For further information and application details, please contact Professor Christian J. Emden (emden@rice.edu; x5312). The deadline for applications falls into the middle of the Spring Semester. Details for the 2009/10 competition will be announced in late Fall 2009.
